The same failed formulas and social agendas – saturated with political correctness, and growing groupthink in the media – it is nearly impossible to hear discussion around ideas instead of ideology. Not only does groupthink make people incapable of independent thought, it also thwarts independent action.
The reason for this conformity among journalists is simple: If you repeat the conventional wisdom, the likelihood of obtaining a lucrative position as a foreign correspondent, a hotshot TV talking head, or a “visiting scholar” at a major think tank. However, if you don’t say what’s expected, your career prospects practically nil.
It’s another way of describing a growing trend in American discourse – groupthink in the media rank and file. Groupthink tends to occur in isolated groups, and in groups where all of the people involved have similar backgrounds. It is destructive to effective thinking.
Groupthink in the media used to be contained within the establishment elite (an isolated group for sure), but as upward mobility within the press has been moved downstream, groupthink has moved with it.
